About the Awards

The Nikon Comedy Wildlife Awards began in 2015 in a small office in Tanzania, when wildlife photographer Paul Joynson-Hicks MBE realised that making people laugh could also be a powerful way to engage them with the threats facing wildlife.

Together with fellow photographer Tom Sullam, he created a competition that uses humour to build empathy with animals and encourages people to value and protect the natural world. Today, thousands of photographs are submitted from around the world each year, capturing wildlife at its funniest and most unexpectedly familiar.

Behind the laughter is an important conservation mission: to widen understanding of the natural world and inspire more people to play a part in protecting its biodiversity.
